Practical tips for stair planning

Important considerations and experiences in planning staircase layouts – from space requirements to optimal use.

See how fast it works
  • Most homeowners work with limited budgets and tend to choose narrow floor plans. However, a hallway with a staircase can also be used differently, and a landing staircase can even hold a bookshelf.
  • Architects and developers, also under cost pressure, often design floor plans that are far too small, making a functional staircase almost impossible. Speak with a stair builder before submitting your building application.
  • A slightly more generous staircase can also serve as a piece of furniture.
  • Space requirements are also influenced by whether the last step is at floor level and whether the landings at the exit are extended. If space is very tight, keep in mind that a steep rise is usually a lesser issue than a very narrow tread.
  • The staircase layout greatly affects the course of the handrail. In narrow staircases, this can result in unattractive and difficult-to-grip height changes.
