Stair Planning

Basics of Stair Calculation

Optimal use of space for staircases with due regard for walkability and standards — the foundation for all subsequent planning steps.

Once the floor plan is set, some calculations are needed to make optimal use of the available area in terms of walkability and compliance with standards. All subsequent steps are based on these definitions. If the specifications change at this stage, all following steps must be repeated. Using a computer program offers many advantages here, as any change to the input values will automatically trigger all subsequent steps to be recalculated.

The following notes primarily refer to stairs in and on buildings — that is, residential stairs. Individual provisions for different building types are presented in parallel with reference to the German standard DIN 18065. DIN 18065 serves as guidance because it represents the state of the art.
