Many people think of timber when they think of stairs. Alongside stone stairs, they are among the oldest stair types. Timber stairs are supplied by joiners or specialist stair manufacturers.

Advantages:

  • Timber stairs — like timber in general — feel “warm.” If you do happen to fall, it’s more forgiving than stone.
  • Timber stairs are easy to refresh or adapt to current tastes with refinishing or paint.
  • Timber offers wide design freedom; there are very contemporary timber stair designs — not everything has to look rustic.

Disadvantages:

  • Timber stairs / treads require periodic maintenance.
  • Poor construction can lead to creaking.

Types

Housed-Stringer Stair

Common and timeless: housed stringer (closed stringer) stairs.

Cut-Stringer (Saddled) Stair

This construction has been around just as long and remains popular.
