The DIBt is, so to speak, the highest German authority for everything related to building. Among other things, it grants building authority approvals for stairs. The DIBt represents national interests in international committees and provides information on all European regulations.

OTH Regensburg has taken over the estate of Friedrich Mielke and established the Institute for Stair Research. Friedrich Mielke coined the term “Scalalogy” for the study of stairs and devoted himself throughout his life to stairs primarily from an art-historical perspective. Whether the study of stairs can actually be regarded as a science is debatable. Nevertheless, his extensive collection—which initially no one wanted—is now available at OTH to students and other interested parties, which is certainly a good thing.
