The German Timber Stair Institute (DHTI) published this code, which is still considered a reference for the design and dimensioning of handcrafted timber stairs. The code became well-known when, in 2013, a court ruled that a staircase whose stringer was thinner than recommended in the code was defective.
Court ruling 2013: deviations from the DHTI code can be assessed as a defect. This code therefore has a quasi-normative character for timber stair builders.

These guidelines complement the official DIN standards and provide practice-oriented aids to interpretation. They partly have a quasi-normative character and should be taken into account when planning and executing stairs and railings.
